After a violent week of shootings in Nashville, families and community members gathered at St. Paul AME Church Sunday to discuss ways to end gun violence.
On Saturday, 30-year-old Joshua McLean was gunned down in the parking lot of the Nashville West shopping center. Police said McLean was shot after he arranged a legal sale of five handguns.
Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, 17-year-old Demarcus Jordan-Ellis was shot and killed inside his home in what Metro police believe to be a drug deal.
“He was a good kid, he was a good kid. He made some mistakes and unfortunately his biggest mistake was probably his last mistake,” the teen’s father, Marcus Ellis told, Nashville’s News 2.
Talia Simmons attended Sunday’s gathering to offer her support for Jordan-Ellis’ family.
Simmons’ son, 17-year-old Antwand Covington Jr. was gunned down, as he arrived at a Sweet 16 birthday party in June.
“It’s just a roller coaster ride. You don’t know how to feel or what to do, everyday you wake up and you think about them everyday,” Simmons told Nashville’s News 2.
The families now want to turn their grief into action, and put an end to these senseless killings.
“It’s not fair, that they don’t get to live their life out,” Simmons said.
“It’s very difficult to know that a life that you brought into the world has been taken out by somebody else on a senseless tragic event,” Ellis added.
“I think it’s time for us to sit down with our political leaders, our mayor and our governor and our other leaders to say what can we do to calm this violence, this senseless gun violence that’s going on all across Nashville,” Earl Jordan, an advocate against gun violence told Nashville’s News 2.
Friday, Metro police arrested Marcus Stone, 20, in connection with the murder of Jordan-Ellis.
Funeral services for Jordan-Ellis will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church located at 2261 Murfreesboro Pike. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m.
