Firefighters had to assist in getting a man out of his car after he crashed into a pole in the Madison area early Friday morning.
The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Saunders Avenue at Fairoaks Drive.
Police told Nashville's News 2 it appears the driver fell asleep as he was rounding the curve along Saunders Avenue.
He hit a ditch and went partially airborne before striking a telephone pole.
Firefighters on the scene had to cut off the driver's side door to get the man out.
An officer said the driver was behind him in the drive through of a nearby McDonald's shortly before the accident.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital with critical but not life-threatening injuries.
It did not appear that alcohol was involved in the incident, police said.
Saunders Avenue was shutdown for about 30 minutes while crews cleared the scene.
