A zookeeper at the Nashville Zoo was transported to an area hospital after sustaining scratches from a giant anteater on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred just before 10 a.m. in a breeding facility at the zoo located on Nolensville Pike.
According to zoo official Jim Bartoo, first aid was immediately given to the employee before she was transported to an area hospital where she was treated and released.
“The whole process was addressed immediately with our protocol and called for assistance. Staff responded within minutes,” Bartoo explained.
He added, “In the near future we will sit down and do a de-briefing to see how these sorts of accidents can be prevented in the future.”
Bartoo said the anteater involved in the incident is not an animal that is on display and that the zoo will continue to monitor the animal.
