Police are investigating a drive-by shooting early Monday morning in Murfreesboro that left a Demopolis, Alabama man dead.
The shooting occurred shortly after Midnight at a home near the intersection of East Chestnut and North Academy streets.
A family was having a cookout in the front yard in celebration of a wedding that had occurred earlier in the weekend.
Police said there were numerous shots fired.
Family members confirm 51-year-old Mickey Simmons was hit by the gunfire and died.
Deborah Tuma told Nashville's News 2 Simmons was struck as he ran to save a child once the gunfire erupted.
“He was saving my nephew, he saved my nephew and got himself killed, got shot in the neck,” said Tuma.
The family does not know why they were targeted.
“We were just having a good time, I don't know what happened, who did it,” Tuma told Nashville's News 2.
Three vehicles were also hit by bullets.
Witnesses reported to police that a silver or gold Chevrolet Impala opened fire as it passed by the residence.
Others stated a four-door white vehicle was also involved.
The investigation is ongoing.
