A south Nashville congregation honored a man who called 911 after lightning sparked a fire, damaging the church last month.

The devastating fire occurred on July 19 at Trinity Church of Nazarene located on Vultee Boulevard after storms pushed through the area, when lightning struck the church steeple.

Logan Linehan was riding his motorcycle in the area with a few buddies when he noticed flames reaching into the night sky.

“I just happened to look up and there saw a crazy fire,” Linehan told Nashville's News 2, “It was kind of scary because it was just the steeple on top that was on fire.”

Linehan said he immediately called 911, staying on the line with dispatchers until Nashville Fire and Rescue arrived moments later.

The church sustained tens of thousands of dollars in damages; however Pastor Mike Proctor credits Linehan's phone call and the fire department's quick response with saving the church thousands more in damages.

“It could've been much worse and we're really blessed it's no more than it is,” Pastor Proctor told Nashville's News 2.

The congregation gathered to honor Linehan during Wednesday evening's church service, presenting him with a plaque and a hearty round of applause.

Linehan thinks he was in the right place at the right time for a reason.

“We came through at the perfect time,” said Linehan. “The storm had just happened.”

No injuries were reported in the incident.
