Sumner County parents may be surprised to learn that the county commission is sitting on $18 million from the sale of Sumner Regional in 2010.

The money has remained untouched since the sale, and some parents and teachers are wondering why this is the case.

“I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be able to dip into it,” said Brenda Parrish a grandmother raising her two grandsons.

Officials said for the money to be used, the commissioners would have to reallocate the funds which many have been hesitant to consider.

They also said using the $18 million is not appropriate use for recurring expenses.

However they have used money from the account to buy a building for the Sumner County School systems transportation facility.

Some parents Nashville's News 2 spoke to said it is time for the commission to dip into the $18 million,  other's like Sumner County Parent Melissa Luther said, “I'd rather see us do something long term, not dip into something where we're going to have the same problem next year. Raise taxes, just do, get it over with.”

Sumner County students were scheduled to return to school on Monday.
