The budget tussle in Sumner County between the county commission and school board could have a drastic effect on sports team throughout the county.

Late last week, the school board voted to delay the start of the school year until a budget agreement is reached.

On Monday night the Sumner County Commission voted to give schools an additional $2.2 million in funding, but the school system says it needs $5 million more.

Officials told Nashville's News 2 if a budget is not reached by August 31, 20 days after the designated first day of school, football season, along with all other sports seasons will be canceled for the year due to TSSAA regulations.

Football dad Billy Paul said if the season is canceled, it will be difficult for Sumner County residents to handle.

“It's a football town. Look at all the boys out here, working in the heat. They've worked hard all summer and they should be able to play,” he said.

Spokesman for Sumner County Schools Jeremy Johnson told Nashville's News 2 a school board meeting to discuss the budget and new start date has not currently been scheduled, but he anticipates an emergency meeting will be called before the end of the week.

Sumner County students were originally supposed to report to school on Monday.
