NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Metro detectives on Thursday morning arrested a man for killing his girlfriend’s 17-month-old daughter earlier this month.
Jacob Hughes is charged with murder and aggravated child abuse for the death of Eloise Costanza.
The 22-year-old was taken into custody during a court appearance on a domestic assault warrant issued in June.
According to a news release, Hughes was responsible for severe head injuries and bruises to the body of the baby girl.
It is alleged that Hughes was caring for her girl on July 8 while the baby’s mother and Hughes’ girlfriend was at work.
Hughes contacted his girlfriend through Facebook and informed her that Eloise was having difficulty breathing.
The child’s mother headed home and, while en route, notified 911.
Paramedics arrived to find the child bruised and unresponsive. They notified police.
Eloise was rushed to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where doctors reported that her injuries, including a skull fracture and a subdural hematoma, were so severe, survival was unlikely.
She died the following day.
Hughes told detectives the child’s injuries were due to a fall.
At autopsy, other injuries were found and the medical examiner ruled the baby’s death a homicide.
Hughes appeared in court Thursday on a domestic assault warrant that accused him of striking his girlfriend in the face, splitting her lower lip, on June 3.
The case was continued.
