Smyrna police arrested the former rescue squad chief and his wife for embezzling department funds earlier this month.

An investigation was initiated in May after police received a report alleging David Manning and former Treasurer Danielle Manning were suspected of taking thousands of dollars from the rescue squad's account.

“A while back we were noticing that funds weren't adding up, a lot of stuff that was supposed to be getting paid [and it] wasn't getting paid,” Smyrna Rescue Squad assistant chief Troy Murray told Nashville's News 2.

Authorities reported during their investigation, the pair admitted to taking the funds and using them for personal use.

According to police, David Manning made $2,300 worth of personal purchases with a credit card belonging to the squad, while Danielle Manning is accused of removing $1,450 from the squad's account.

Authorities reported the money was used to make repairs to their vehicle, purchase fuel and snacks.

The money embezzled by the Manning's came from donations and fundraisers.

“When we have pretty much no budget coming in at all from the county or city, yeah that's very vital,” Murray added.

Murray told Nashville's News 2 the rescue squad now wants to remain focused on the mission of helping community.

“All we can do is work forward from here and try to make everything right, continue going the route we've been trying to go lately and show the county that we're still here,” said Murray.

Nashville's News 2 knocked on the door of the Manning's home, but there was no answer.

Officials said David and Danielle Manning resigned from their positions prior to the investigation.

Both are charged with theft. They are scheduled to appear in court September 24.
