In most cases, it's safer to make a salad on a toilet seat than it is to make one on a cutting board, according to Dr. Charles Gerba, a microbiologist and professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Better known as “Dr. Germ,” Dr. Gerba identified the top five most germ-infested spots in your kitchen.
The sponge or dishcloth tops the list at No. 1. About 10 % tested by the doctor's team had salmonella on it.
Dishcloths should be replaced weekly and sponges should be sanitized in the dishwasher or placed in the microwave for 30 seconds.
The sink came in at No. 2. Chances are there will be more E. coli in your sink than in your toilet after you flush it, according to the doctor.
Other germy culprits include cutting boards, countertops and the bottom shelf of the refrigerator because moisture and condensation drip down, creating a breeding ground for bacteria.
Dr. Germ says all surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected regularly.
