Franklin police are crediting a Good Samaritan for preventing a shoplifter from fleeing the scene of a retailer at the Cool Springs Galleria Mall on Tuesday evening.

The incident involving 18-year-old Jalen Dotson occurred at Macy's just before 5 p.m.

Authorities reported security observed Dotson conceal a tank top valued at $14.50 under his shirt and attempt to exit the store.

When a security officer tried to stop him, Dotson reportedly struck him and fled into the mall.

During the teen's attempted getaway, he also threw a punch at an uninvolved shopper who witnessed the incident.

Police said the shopper was able to hold Dotson on the ground until security was able to taken him into custody.

He is charged with shoplifting and two counts of assault. Dotson remains jailed on a $7,500 bond.
