A gas line rupture at a construction site forced evacuations Monday afternoon in south Nashville.

The leak was reported around 1:50 p.m. at the intersection of Eighth Avenue South and Prentice Avenue, south of Wedgewood Avenue.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and blocked off traffic in the area.

About 100 people were evacuated from Emma, an email marketing company located at the intersection.

Employees had to climb up a ladder and over a fence to flee the parking lot.

District Chief Buddy Byers said an excavator struck a high pressure gas line, causing the leak.

A few homes in the area were also evacuated as a precaution.

The leak was contained about two hours later.

Employees and residents have since been allowed to reenter buildings and homes.

Additional information was not released.
