Burger Up restaurant co-founder Michael Pontes died over the weekend from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Metro police spokesperson Don Aaron said.
Officers were called to the restaurant on 12th Avenue South just after 4 a.m. Saturday to find Pontes.
Aaron said evidence said showed his death was a suicide.
The 43-year-old co-founded Burger Up on the corner of 12th Avenue and Paris Street in May 2010 with his wife, Miranda Whitcomb Pontes.
A second location recently opened in Cool Springs.
Aaron said police were told the couple was in the middle of a divorce.
Saturday afternoon, a tweet on the restaurant's Twitter page read, “The world lost a beautiful soul early this morning. @BurgerUP will reopen someday. Until then, with love.”
The restaurant was closed Saturday and brown paper hung across the windows. Flowers began showing up outside the restaurant as the day progressed.
It was announced Sunday the restaurant plans to reopen on Wednesday.
