New, larger police precinct opens in west Nashville

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean helped the city's police department celebrate the opening of its newest precinct Wednesday morning in west Nashville.

With 23,000 square feet of space, the new West precinct, located at 5500 Charlotte Pike is more than four times larger and built to meet LEED Silver environmental standards.

Sustainable features in the building include a white roof to reflect heat away from the building, pervious surfaces in the parking area to help keep stormwater out of the sewer system, energy-efficient light fixtures controlled by motion sensors and Energy Star appliances and equipment.

The building also includes a 2,300-square-foot community room and a 20,000-square-foot garage with an electric car charging station.

The West precinct is one of the six existing precincts in Nashville and presently encompasses 134 square miles, spanning from the West End corridor to Bellevue.

Two brand new precincts are in the works for Nashville.

In January, the Madison precinct is scheduled to open at the former Peterbilt manufacturing facility off Myatt Drive and a new Midtown Hills precinct, planned for the corner of 12th Avenue South and Wade Avenue near Wedgewood Avenue, is scheduled to open in early 2013.
