A Nashville man has cashed in on the lack of an IKEA store in Middle Tennessee.

The idea of ModerNash popped into waiter turned entrepreneur Nick Ray's head five years ago when the IKEA items he placed on Craigslist sold in minutes.

Today, ModerNash takes three trips a month to Atlanta to pick up items from IKEA, each time buying about $40,000 worth of goods from the Swedish designed modern furniture store.

IKEA only sells about 30% of its products online, and for those products, shipping costs can amount to 150% of the product price.

One year into business, ModerNash grew 300%.

Ray quit his job waiting tables and started growing the business fulltime.

As the business continued to grow, they opened a showroom where the furniture is shown assembled and displayed.

ModerNash also offers design advice and in-home delivery and assembly, among other customer service elements IKEA stores traditionally lack.

“We want to be their one-stop shop for all things IKEA,” Ray told Nashville's News 2.  “There's a reason the furniture is inexpensive, they don't have one to two staff members for every two to four people at the store so if you need help you're kind of on your own.”

Doing the dirty work for you has paid off.  ModerNash is now doing $1 million in sales a year.

Ray's next plan for the business is franchising the model to other cities.

The cost of delivery depends on how much you buy.
