A burglary suspect was killed early Monday morning in Gallatin after striking a brick retaining wall during an attempt to flee authorities.

Officers responded to a burglary alarm at Star Auto Sales located at the intersection of West Eastland Street and Blythe Avenue around 3 a.m.

A suspect ran from the building, jumped into an awaiting pickup truck and fled.

Police said he traveled three-quarters of a mile north on Blythe Street, failed to negotiate a turn and hit a brick retaining wall.

The driver, 43-year-old Randy Hix, died on the scene.

A 36-year-old female passenger was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where she was last listed in critical but stable condition.

Police said she was wearing her seatbelt.  Hix, of Lafayette, was not.

The accident remains under investigation.

Police said entry was never gained into Star Auto Sales although someone, presumably Hix, attempted to pry open the rear door.

Hix will be tested for drugs and alcohol.
