A loaded gun was discovered Tuesday evening in a passenger's carry-on bag at Nashville International Airport.
The .38 caliber firearm was found just before 6 p.m. by officers with the Transportation Security Administration.
Airport police were alerted, took possession of the bag and cited the passenger on a local charge.
While firearms may be transported in checked baggage provided they are declared to the airline, in a proper carrying case and unloaded, they are prohibited in carry-on luggage.
Approximately 35 firearms have been discovered by TSA at Nashville's airport so far this year. Tuesday evening's discovery was the third this month.
“Passengers should look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items,” TSA spokesman Jon Allen said in a release sent to Nashville's News 2.
In addition to potential criminal charges, passengers who bring firearms to an airport checkpoint face civil penalties from TSA.
