CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A Smyrna mother was arrested last week in Chattanooga on charges she tried to suffocate her four-year-old son.
Chattanooga police said 41-year-old Monica Hammers brought her son to T.C. Thompson's Hospital for court mandated medical testing last Thursday.
While there, a witness observed Hammers grab her son by the arm and shake him.
When the child began crying, the witness reported Hammers took a pillow and placed it over the boy's face for about five or six seconds.
Police said Hammers ran into a bathroom after she saw the witness watching her.
The witness reported the incident to hospital staff, who escorted Hammers off the property.
She was later arrested and charged with attempted first degree murder.
The child has been placed in protective custody pending further investigation, police said.
