LAVERGNE, Tenn. – The more than 300 employees at the Borders Books and Music distribution center in LaVergne were notified Tuesday morning that the facility will be closing later this year.

The move comes after more than 200 jobs were cut at the center located to the southeast of Nashville since 2009.

In a statement, the company said it would close its Tennessee Distribution Center in mid July and that the move is part of its “long-term plan to enhance the efficiency of its distribution network and reduce operating expenses.”

“After an extensive review of its supply chain, the company found it has excess capacity in its distribution network and requires only two distribution centers to process and ship inventory to stores,” the statement said.

When the Mid-State facility closes, functions will be transferred to the company's distribution centers in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and Mira Loma, California.

Borders said the 310 impacted employees will be offered a severance package, and the company was working with Tennessee unemployment officials to further assist them.
