NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Davis-Kidd Booksellers announced on Thursday they will be closing their Green Hills location due to bankruptcy next month.

The Joseph-Beth Group, which is the parent company for the bookstore, voluntarily filed a Chapter 11 petition in the United States Bankruptcy Court in Lexington, Kentucky.

The company said they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in order to restructure its debt and improve its financial stability.

“Davis-Kidd Booksellers has been an institution in Nashville. It breaks my heart to have to close this store,” said owner of the Joseph-Beth Group Neil Van Uum in a release.

Nashvillians are also disappointed to see the bookstore close next month.

Theresa Lee told News 2 that she brings her two daughters to the bookstore for story time and music lessons.

“It's going to be sad. We're hoping something might happen, a miracle or something,” Lee said.

Nancy Lewis told News 2 that Nashville will not be the same without the bookstore.

“I cannot image Green Hills without Davis-Kidd. We're all going to miss it terribly. The other book competitors can't hold a candle to the essence of what this bookstore is and what it means to this town,” Lewis said.

Local bookstore owners are also saddened to see the well known Green Hills bookstore close its doors.

“We grieve every time a bookstore goes out of business,” owner of Bookman/Bookwoman Saralee Woods told News 2.

Davis-Kidd Booksellers also closed locations in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The bookseller is expected to liquidate its merchandise later this month and continue sales through its closing in December.

The Memphis Davis-Kidd Booksellers is expected to remain open.
