Police close McNair case after nearly 6 months

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – More than five months after they were found fatally shot in a downtown Nashville condominium, the district attorney said he agrees with the Metro Police Department’s decision to close its investigation into deaths of former Tennessee Titans’ quarterback Steve McNair and Sahel Kazemi.

“I concur with investigators of the case who determined this to be a murder/suicide,” Davidson County District Attorney General Torry Johnson said in a statement released by Metro police Friday. “There is no one else to prosecute in this matter.”

The decision to close the case comes as convicted murderer Adrian Gilliam was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for selling the nine millimeter pistol Kazemi used to kill McNair and then herself on July 4.

Police said due to the high profile of McNair’s death, some reports in the media offered other theories and conjecture as to the sequence of events but there has been no proof to substantiate any and the hard evidence indicates Kazemi killed McNair and then herself.

In a press conference late Friday morning, Metro police Sgt. Pat Postiglione stood by Metro’s investigation and addressed some of the theories.

“Did we think initially that it could be a double homicide?  Certainly we did but once we got into it, we were able to determine that’s not what it was, it was actually a murder-suicide,” he said.  “Are there other persons who had interest in Ms. Kazemi?  Absolutely.  Persons [who] were maybe jealous?  Some of that is possible of course but nothing along the lines of going to kill the two people and oh, by the way, let’s make it look like a murder suicide, very difficult to do, and we don’t believe that happened.”

In response to those who say the 20-year-old Kazemi isn’t capable of committing such a crime, the nearly 30-year police department veteran said “people can do amazing things when they have their mind set on it.”

He continued, “I think she had her mind set on killing the man she thought she loved, was deeply in love with, could not live without, so she thought that if she couldn’t have him then nobody would.  I’m not assuming that, but that’s what I think happened.”

Sgt. Postiglione also dismissed claims McNair’s friend and co-renter of the condo, Wayne Neely, altered the crime scene upon discovery of the bodies early that July afternoon.

“We know it’s ridiculous, but it is what it is,” he said.  “There’s nothing to suggest Wayne Neely, why he did what he did, why he took 55 minutes, why he didn’t call 911 early on, when he called someone else, only Wayne knows why he did that but none of that has anything to do with the incident.  That’s what everyone is missing.  Do we have some suspicious people out there?  Yeah, we do but [that doesn’t change] the dynamics of what happened in that room.  We know what happened.  She killed Steve McNair and then killed herself.”
