NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Police in Nashville have arrested a man they say has been stealing checks and cashing them.
According to police, Gary Wayne Hill has been stealing women’s purses from shopping carts and mail from mailboxes to get the checks inside.
Detectives say he would wash the checks, put his own name on them and cash them.
In the purse snatching instances, authorities said the victims are usually distracted or looking away when he grabs their purses.
Hill, 56, of Franklin, is charged with eight counts of forgery, one count of theft and one count of attempted robbery for Thursday’s purse snatching at the Trader Joes in Green Hills.
He is being held in the Metro jail on $300,000 bond.
