MONTGOMERY CO., Tenn. – A soldier recently transferred to Ft. Campbell is behind bars in Montgomery County, charged with criminal homicide in the death of his wife.

Staff Sgt. Jonathan Clyde Downing, 31, was taken into custody shortly before noon Tuesday after his wife, 25-year-old Sena Marie Downing, was discovered shot to death in the couple's Clarksville home.

At about 3:15 a.m., officers with the Clarksville Police Department responded to the residence on Autumnwood Boulevard after receiving information someone there may have been shot.

When they arrived, they found a door ajar and walked inside.

Sena Downing was found fatally shot in the garage.

Jonathan Downing was named a suspect and a be-on-the lookout was issued.

His 2007 Ford Explorer was located Cedar Hill, in neighboring Robertson County, and Downing was found hiding in a nearby wooded area, behind Heads Free Will Baptist Church on Heads Church Road.

Clarksville police said at first, Downing refused to come out but eventually surrendered and was taken in custody.

The U.S. Army said Downing, of Ventura, California, enlisted in 1995 and was recently transferred to Ft. Campbell for reassignment.

He previously assigned to Ft. Campbell from 2005 to 2007 and has deployed to Iraq twice, once with the 101st Airborne Division.

Downing is charged with criminal homicide and was booked into the Montgomery County jail without bond.
