NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man sleeping inside a house in east Nashville narrowly escaped when the home went up in flames Wednesday morning.
Firefighters were called to the house on Shelby Avenue shortly before 11 a.m. and flames could be seen shooting through the roof.
Investigators say a man sleeping inside managed to get out when he heard a fire alarm go off.
It is believed the fire started in the basement and quickly spread to the entire house.
“Upon arriving, our companies found smoke coming through the roof, upon entering they found the fire was confined to the basement, but after a while it began to spread up throughout the entire house,” said Maggie Lawrence, Assistant Fire Marshall for the Nashville Fire Department.

She said plenty of water and Gatorade was given to the firefighters, along with wet towels due to the heat.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
