Felon arrested following McNair’s death to stay in prison

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Family and friends gathered at the Federal Courthouse in Nashville Friday afternoon, ready to testify in behalf of Adrian Gilliam, Jr.

The 33-year-old LaVergne man is charged with possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon.

According to court documents, Gilliam told police he sold a nine millimeter gun to Sahel Kazemi on July 2 for about $100.

Two days later, Metro police said Kazemi used the pistol to shoot and kill former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair in his downtown condo and then took her own life.

The U.S. Attorney says the sale of the gun was legal, but Gilliam’s possession of the weapon in the first place was not.

He served time in Florida for attempted armed robbery and second degree murder, and has been out of prison for seven years.

Gilliam lives in LaVergne with his fiance and their two-year-old child.

The preliminary hearing was delayed earlier this week when Gilliam’s federal public defender asked for more time to interview witnesses.

Friday the defense waived its right to a preliminary hearing and detention hearing.

Attorney Hugh Mundy told the judge Gilliam reserves the right to return to court at a later date and seek a bond hearing.

He remains in federal custody for now.
