Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen says he wants counties hit hardest by unemployment to get their share of projects funded by the recently-passed economic stimulus package.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation estimates the state will get $572 million to fund construction projects.

LaVergne Mayor Ronnie Erwin wants some of the stimulus money to help finish an ongoing road project.

He is requesting the stimulus money to help improve a section of Waldron Road, off Interstate 24.

Waldron Road is a busy road that connects the interstate with Murfreesboro Road.

The road changes names to Parthenon Boulevard closer to Murfreesboro Road and narrows to only one lane.

Mayor Erwin hopes to get $13 million to fund the project which would widen Waldron Road and would also go towards bridge improvements nearby.

He said the project has been a long-time coming, and now is the time to do it.

“The board we have now took the bulls by the horn and said this is the time.  We have to do it now,” he said.

Mayor Erwin said the city needs the stimulus money to help fund the road project partly because he doesn't want to have to raise taxes instead.
